Managing your emotions

How to Handle Uncomfortable Emotions

Frustration, anger, guilt, fear — these feelings can feel heavy, but they are not your enemies. In this short video, Women Leading Women Australia founder Karen Brinkley explains how to understand and release uncomfortable emotions before they cause long-term harm.

Why emotions matter

Every emotion serves a purpose. Even the most painful ones are signals, showing you where something needs attention or change. Uncomfortable emotions are not “bad”; they are messages from your inner world asking to be acknowledged and acted upon.

What happens when we hold on

Holding on to resentment, guilt, or anger is like holding your hand on a hot stove — the pain is a signal to move, not to linger. When we stay stuck in these feelings, we burn ourselves emotionally, sometimes for years. Recognising this is the first step toward release.

How to release uncomfortable emotions

Start by naming what you feel. That act alone helps your mind and body reconnect. Then, look for the message within the emotion:

  • Anger signals a boundary has been crossed.
  • Guilt shows you have crossed your own values.
  • Frustration arises when effort and reward feel misaligned.
  • Fear appears when safety feels threatened — even if the danger is only imagined.

Move the energy through

Once you’ve understood the message, let it move. Run, walk, dance, write, cry, box, or even wash it off in the shower — whatever helps your body release that stored energy. The goal isn’t to ignore the emotion, but to process and move beyond it.

If this message resonates, reach out. Karen offers support for women learning to manage and move through uncomfortable emotions with awareness and compassion — because healing doesn’t come from resisting emotion, but from letting it flow.
