Are you sure that story is true?
Your Inner Thoughts: Are You Sure They’re True?
Every day, hundreds of inner thoughts run quietly through our minds. Some motivate and uplift us — others drain our confidence before we’ve even begun. The question is: how many of those thoughts are actually true?
In this video, Karen Brinkley from Women Leading Women Australia explores how the stories we tell ourselves shape our emotions, energy, and outcomes. Learning to pause and question those stories can open an entirely new way of thinking.
Notice the stories your mind tells
Throughout the day, your mind creates running commentary: assumptions about deadlines, colleagues, or your own abilities. Some stories fill you with excitement and purpose. Others leave you heavy and tense. Start by simply noticing which stories lift you — and which ones drain you.
Ask the question: “Are you sure?”
When you hear a story in your head, pause and ask, “Am I sure this is true?” Most of the time, our certainty disappears under the spotlight of that question. It’s not about dismissing the thought — it’s about seeing it clearly before believing it.
Shift your perspective
Once you’ve challenged your inner thoughts, you create room for possibility. Instead of “I’ll never manage this project,” you might discover, “I can ask for support” or “I’ve handled bigger challenges before.” It’s a gentle but powerful act of reclaiming your energy.
For the next few days, pay attention to the stories your mind tells you. When they start to sap your confidence, ask again: Are you sure? You might be surprised by how much freedom that single question can bring.
