NOvember (The joy and power of ‘no’)
The Joy of Saying No: Reclaiming Your Energy
There’s power — and unexpected joy — in learning to say no. In this message, Women Leading Women Australia founder Karen Brinkley shares why setting boundaries isn’t just brave leadership, it’s a profound act of self-respect that restores your time, energy, and clarity.
When commitment costs too much
Many executive women struggle to say no because it challenges deeply held values — service, commitment, perfection, belonging. Karen shares her own story of stepping down from a leadership role that had become too costly, emotionally and physically. Saying no took courage (and 37 email drafts), but once she did, the guilt gave way to relief and freedom.
The stories behind the guilt
When we say no, we often tell ourselves stories — that we’ve let people down, failed to finish, or risked our reputation. But when Karen reflected on those stories, she realised she had already fulfilled her purpose: she’d contributed meaningfully, led with integrity, and left the organisation stronger than she found it.
The joy that follows
Beyond the initial discomfort comes something lighter — joy. The joy of space, renewed energy, and focus for what truly matters. As Karen puts it, “The relief, the lightness, the optimism — it’s all waiting on the other side of no.”
Where to begin
This month, ask yourself: what are you ready to say no to? Not from resentment, but from wisdom. Because every “no” creates space for a bigger, truer “yes.” Try it — it’s worth it.
