Preventing burnout in your team
How to Prevent Burnout: Masterclass for Leaders & Teams
Burnout doesn’t just affect individuals — it ripples through entire teams. In this one-hour masterclass, Women Leading Women Australia founder Karen Brinkley shares how to identify, prevent, and respond to burnout before it costs your health, your leadership impact, or your team’s performance.
Understanding the stages of burnout
Karen explains that burnout unfolds in three progressive stages — the onset of stress, chronic stress, and full-blown burnout. Each stage has distinct signs, from irritability and insomnia to deep exhaustion and emotional withdrawal. Recognising where you or your team are on this spectrum is essential, because recovery strategies differ for each level.
What causes burnout?
Burnout doesn’t happen because of weakness — it happens when high-performing, conscientious women are overloaded for too long without adequate recovery. Karen outlines two major contributors: workplace factors such as unmanageable workloads, unfair treatment, lack of autonomy, unsupportive culture, and values mismatch; and personal temperament traits such as perfectionism, service ethic, and the relentless type-A drive.
The cost of ignoring the signs
Burnout carries both financial and human costs. Organisations lose their brightest leaders — often at a cost of hundreds of thousands of dollars — while individuals can lose years of income, confidence, and joy. Karen reminds us that early intervention is far less costly than recovery, both personally and professionally.
What effective action looks like
Preventing burnout requires courage and clarity. For leaders, it may mean addressing team workloads, redefining priorities, or changing the culture of “always on.” For individuals, it may mean taking extended rest, reassessing values, or seeking professional help. As Karen says, “Burnout in leadership is contagious — but so is recovery.”
