Hands up… Who’s tired?

Leadership Burnout: Why Tired Isn’t Just Tired

The truth is, leadership burnout doesn’t always look like collapse — sometimes, it just feels like endless tiredness that never quite lifts. In this message, Women Leading Women Australia founder Karen Brinkley shares what happens when “pushing through” becomes the problem rather than the solution.

The hidden fatigue behind leadership

When Karen asked a room of board directors and executives how many had walked in feeling tired, more than half raised their hands. It’s no surprise — after years of crisis management, many leaders are still carrying the weight of exhaustion without naming it. A weekend away or an early night doesn’t fix the deeper depletion that accumulates through constant decision-making and emotional labour.

Why rest alone isn’t enough

A good night’s sleep is important, but it can’t repair the kind of fatigue that builds from months or years of sustained pressure. When we push through without addressing the cause, tired becomes our baseline — and that’s when mistakes multiply, creativity fades, and empathy dries up. Leadership burnout doesn’t just affect individuals; it erodes teams, boards, and entire organisational cultures.

Replenishment as a leadership skill

True leadership requires the capacity to restore. Karen invites leaders to treat replenishment as a responsibility, not a reward. Schedule spaciousness, delegate intentionally, and build in moments that allow your energy to return — because a burnt-out leader can’t serve a thriving team.

Checking in with yourself and others

If you’re feeling beyond tired, listen to what your body and heart are telling you. Reach out — to a colleague, a friend, a trusted advisor, or a professional. And if you’re okay but you know someone who isn’t, forward this message and check in with them today. As Karen says, “Hands up if you’re ready to move on from tired and put it behind you once and for all.”
